♟️ Stockfight

Pick your opponent's strength

One game of chess against Stockfish. You pick how hard it plays before the first move, and that number is also the prize — one coin per 200 Elo, paid only if you checkmate it. A draw, a loss and a resignation are all worth nothing. You are White and you move first.

Strongest beaten

Stockfish's own strength setting bottoms out at 1320, so below that the engine is held at 1320 and starts with less army instead — a pawn down at 1300, a knight, a rook, its queen, all the way to 100, where it has nothing but its king. It never plays badly on purpose: what a low setting buys is on the board in front of you before the first move. There are only fifteen pieces to take away, so below 1320 the dial has fifteen stops and snaps to them; above it, every 25 is its own setting. Every move you make is checked by the server against its own copy of the position, and the win that pays is a checkmate it watched happen.
